"Onlookers" 2017 oil on canvas 38" x 38"
I have had a photo of two people in their LL Bean outwear for many years and never knew how to implement it into a painting.
A close-up uf just the two figures seemed like portraiture to me and not what I wanted. I needed them to be figures in a composition for a greater dialogue than what two faces would offer. The barn is from an earlier painting of a barn on the NY Thruway just south of Albany. It still needed something in the foreground so I added the two Adirondack chairs. So I have a composition in which the barn is silently watching the people and the chairs are either waiting for occupants or watching as well.
I don't know what any of it means.
