"Hopewell Schoolhouse Early Morning" 2014 oil on canvas 24" x 48"
I assume this building was a schoolhouse at one time. It now sits abandoned on the property of the Hopewell Township Police Department. When I pass this on my drive to work, I am struck by the sunlight hitting the white door and the deep blue shadow that is cast. I don't think this painting is terribly successful. The overhang is too deep and doesn't connect. Looks like it is about to lift off. I think I should make a new painting of the door and part of the wall and forget the rest. More of a close up, at a side angle, with a sliver of landscape beyond.
What I do like about it is the small piece of sky to the right of the building, balanced by the large expanse on the left. I find that the liitle piece of sky is compressed enough to become a shape itself, instead of sky. That positive / negative space fluctuation. I always find that exciting, don't you?!"
