"Green Socks and Ram" 2018 oil on canvas 38" x 38"
I was sitting in our living room in the late afternoon and noticed the blue light streaming across the black wood floor. I set up my portable easel and made a charcoal sketch. I scanned the sketch into my computer and using some sort of painting software, managed to capture the colors of that time of day for reference.
The sketch only showed the room and furniture. It seemed a bit empty so I thought about adding figures on the sofa and in the chair. This seemed forced. Then it struck me that legs and feet on the sofa would be enough.
The ram's head was not yet in the picture. The space above the piano was empty and seemed unbalanced. I didn't want a framed picture. The ram hangs in the room beyond so I thought if I moved it above the piano, I get the gaze into the light, balance and the opportunity for the title.
