"Dead End" 2017 oil on canvas 12" x 12"
(Private Collection, Lexington, KY)
I had a sketch of this house made from memory of a house on Cape Cod. I made a computer model of the house and cast the shadows. I had no setting so I created what seems like a dead end street with a sidewalk the ends at the fron door and a driveway.
At that point I thought the painting was complete. The next day I decided it didn't work. The drivway needed something so I added the car. Somehow, the entire car length seemed too competitive with the house so I cropped it.
The type of car was another consideration. An old car with an old house seemed cliched. A new car seemed out of place. I decided something from the 70's would work. I think the car is fashioned after our family Chevy station wagon from that time. It was the same color.
