"Cafe Au Lait Au Soleil" 2015 oil on canvas 52" x 56"
(Private Collection, Falls Church, VA)
I had taken a photo of a building on a street in Paris because I loved the textures of the shutters and the randomness of whether they were open or closed or somewhere inbetween, set against the repetitive pattern of the architecture. It seemed that each window contained a different story of the apartment occupant. I thought of the Egoist perfume commercial from the 80's but I didn't want too many people. One would be enough so that the others would be inferred.
I had a friend pose. I set up a cafe table on the deck in the back yard and had her sit as if she was sipping her morning coffee in the sun while watching the street activity below. As for the other windows, I don't know what's going on.
I mostly enjoyed painting the water stains on the building and the blue shadows to the left of each window. I could get lost in the process and hear French accordion music in my mind. Well, I didn't actually hear the music
