"Arborvitae-Henge" 2016 oil on canvas 46" x 46"
After I made the small sketch painting, "Big Arborvitae", I decided to make another painting of these large bush-creatures. I went back to the cemetery and made a pastel sketch from which I made this painting. There is an area in the cemetery where the bushes have been planted in close proximity to one another so that they almost come off as a Stonehenge-like sculpture or an attack of very large Brussels Sprouts.
I couldn't decide if the painting was finished. It seemed like it needed something more. I toyed with the idea of adding a figure crouching down to place a potted plant by a headstone and then have a dog pooping by another headstone and call it 'Crouching Towards Bethlehem". The next day I gave up on that idea and signed the painting.
